Importing any vehicle to Canada is a multistage process as it is regulated by several government agencies. The following guide will help you as the complex process is broken down into steps to be completed one after the other.

1. The very first step is to check the vehicle admissibility with the five agencies that are involved in the process. These are US Customs Border Protection, Transport Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
2. All documents that are required by either of the above said agencies should be in order.
3. Though not mandatory, it is advisable to hire professional custom broker services. To legally exit the US border, export documents with a valid ITN/AES number and proof of ownership is to be submitted 72 hours prior to crossing. Custom broker services like Clearit ITN requests can be of great help in all these procedures.
4. Once the U.S. Customs and Border Protection clears the vehicles, it is the turn of the Canadian agencies to check if the vehicle appears in the list of permissible vehicles in the country and whether all paper work is in order or not.
5. Once through with Canada Border Services Agency and after meeting the requirements of Canadian Food Inspection Agency, it is now time to pay the RIV registration fee.
6. This fee can be paid in person, through mail or online. So, you can pay by check, money order or by using your debit or credit cards.
7. Now that your vehicle is imported, you have 45 days to take it to the approved inspection facility for passing inspection and registration.
8. Importing a vehicle to Canada is a lengthy and complex process. The law of the country also mandates that all the records of importation should be kept by the importer for a period of six years. Thus, don’t forget to keep all records on file.

As many agencies are involved, all of which have their requirements regarding documents, deadlines etc., if you want the procedure to move on smoothly, it is advisable to hire the services of a professional. They are well versed with each and every stage and will make the ride easy and smooth for you.
